Welcome to Physics

Physics 105 (Collage Physics) is a preparatory course for students wanting to access a career in a technology dependent field. This includes Life Science (including Medical, Pharmaceutical, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Dental, Biology, Bio-Chem, etc.), Computer Science, Architecture, Engineering (including electrical, mechanical, civil, structural, computer, nuclear, etc.), and, of course, Math, Chemistry, Astronomy, Geology, & Physics.

Why is physics considered elemental to these majors?

My answer is problem solving. Every job has a level of problem solving. From delivering pizza, to health inspection of a restaurant. From making change at a cash register, to designing NFC (Near Field Communication) software for your iPhone or Android. From assembling toys at a department store, to designing and building a robot. Every job has a level of difficulty, a level of problem solving. P105 is your entry to this world, which leads me to the next statement: “the amount of money you can make is dependent upon the level of difficulty of the problems you can solve”.

This is my opinion and I base my teaching on it. If you follow my structure you have an excellent chance in passing Physics 105.

A few statistics
In the Spring 2011 semester:

58 of the original 89 enrolled passed – 65.2%
The same 58 of the 81 who took the first exam passed – 71.6%

A – 13
B – 26
C – 19
D – 7
F – 8
16 drop

A few more stats
In the Fall 2011 semester:

59 of the original 87 enrolled passed – 67.8%
The same 59 of the 77 who took the first exam passed – 76.6%
The same 59 of the 65 who took the final exam passed – 90.8%

A – 22
B – 17
C – 20
D – 5
F – 1
22 drop

Notice that the number of students that received an A, B, or C is about the same in both classes.
Notice that the number of students that received an D, F, or Withdrew is about the same in both classes.

For more up to date data here are the results from Spring 2013

A – 13
B – 33
C – 20
D – 4
F – 1
23 drop

66 of the original 94 enrolled passed – 70.2%
The same 66 of the 87 who took the first exam passed – 75.9%
The same 66 of the 71 who took the final exam passed – 93.0%

If you do not believe the completion percentages are high compared to others courses you have taken remember the requirements – Trigonometry and a good understanding of the English language. Your math skills must be of a moderate to high order as we will be using trig the first week of lab and the second week of lecture. Your english skill must be of equal caliber as almost all the homework, Supplemental Instruction and all test questions are word problems. Your incoming mastery of math and english is the prime indicator of your success.

Other areas to be aware of:
Number of units you are taking
Number of hours you are working
Amount of family commitments

These areas and one other I will discuss in class during the first week have the most impact on a student’s class success.

Best wishes,

jg
